Maarten De Ceulaer obtained a degree in Interior Design at the Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Brussel. Following that succesful stint, he pursued a focus on product and furniture design at the Design Academy of Eindhoven. He was the recepient of the Dynamo Belgian Young Designers Award in 2007.
His designs are mostly based on one strong, simple and pure concept. Poetry, humour and the communication of ideas are very important aspects of his designs. But even with these whimsical ideas, they come to fruition in products that are fully functional and beautifully designed. Some examples of this process are evidenced in the cleverly-done desk and drawer sets that he created for his “Leather Collection.” I have to admit that I was completely fooled at first glance, and after further inspection, I laughed it off and developed great appreciation for this artist’s reference point.
