The ICON is a recreation of the classic FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser using only the finest quality new materials and cutting-edge technology. The mastermind behind he ICON is Jonathan Ward, owner of TLC, a California Land Cruiser specialist that has worked closely with Toyota in the past, equipping vehicles for special events and producing prototypes – including three working models of what was to become the 2007 FJ Cruiser. It was this that inspired the ICON. TLC’s proposals were not used by Toyota and Jonathan decided to build his vision of an updated FJ40 himself. The result is nothing, if not impressive.
Although it can be tailored to customers individual needs, the basic specs include a 5.3L V8, aluminium body with a Teflon polyester hybrid super durable Cardinal powder coat that was originally conceived for exterior industrial architectural uses and jewellery-grade metal for the controls on the dash. And, depending on your tastes the ICON comes as a retro Old School version or as a subtly-updated New School variant. It’s not cheap – prices start at around $96,000 – but with their only-the-best-is-good-enough approach, Ward and TLC are proving to be one corner of the US car industry that is driving cross-country to a bright future.
