The internationally acclaimed Mineral House is a small, avant-garde residence located in downtown Tokyo. Designed by Yasuhiro Yamashita, it has received a number of accolades and awards since its completion. It is a radical departure from the surrounding built environment, standing as a bright white modernist beacon in the crowded confines of the city. The restrictive urban site spawned the unusual shape of the home, which appears to be a distorted cube with a portion of its bottom half removed to accommodate parking. The Mineral House is only 480 square feet, but an open plan and unobtrusive interior furnishings serve to avoid a cramped impression. Yamashita explains that the interior is his modern interpretation of traditional Japanese minimalism. The distorted exterior aesthetic is carried to the interior where the walls and built in elements reflect the shape of the outside surfaces.
