A barren but serene plot of land in Hawaii on Big Island provides the backdrop for architect Craig Steely’s Robert Trickey House. A winding path cut into the hardened lava leads to the 6200 square foot modern home which stands as a sharp divergence from the treacherous terrain. The house is an oasis of clean minimalism with views of the bordering ocean and the glowing Kilauea Crater in the distance. It is composed of two distinct elements- a single story studio and an adjacent two story home. Both the studio and the home’s lower level open onto a 40×40 foot deck that houses a pool and lounge areas. The Robert Trickey House employs large expanses of glass that afford its inhabitants views of the ethereal surrounding landscape.
