The Gypsy House, located in Berkley, CA, is a recently completed dwelling by architect Craig Steely. The home’s site is a steep hillside, and Steely addressed it by dividing it into two “zones.” The lower zone is embedded into the hillside and its façade is dominated by the garage doors. The upper zone, on the other hand, is an airy wood and glass volume that cantilevers over the lower zone toward the view of the valley below. The use of wood is a recurring theme throughout both the interior and exterior of the home. Steely managed to assimilate an organic aesthetic with modern architecture by choosing natural wood finishes and planting native vegetation on flat roof surfaces. The wood is paired with an abundance of operable windows, allowing both light and breezes in all rooms of the home. Additionally, unique design flourishes appear throughout the Gypsy House, such as the prominent floating staircase and its accompanying glass ceiling.
