British menswear designer Carolyn Massey created her AW09 collection with the “militant gentleman” in mind, dipping into the archives at the National Army Museum for reference. Her inspiration is clear in her structured garments with aggressively masculine silhouettes. While baggy trousers with suspenders and ascots may call to mind Victorian-era apparel, some pieces allude to the not-so-distant past, like a double-breasted 1980’s power suit updated in khaki, and long, dark sweaters and boots that recall the grunge heyday of the 90’s. The 27-year-old has always favored sophisticated design, even in her collaboration with mass-market retailer Topman, and this season is no different. Still, her AW09 collection has the versatility to satisfy both fashion-forward and mainstream tastes.
