When Matthew Williamson’s womenswear collection for H&M went on sale last week, lines were around the corner before the New York flagship store opened at 9 a.m. and pieces sold out within minutes. On May 14th, men have their chance to brave mass-market retail pandemonium, when H&M makes available Williamson’s first menswear line, inspired by his own personal style. The appeal of owning a piece of clothing by a designer at the top of his game at H&M prices is easy to understand, but be warned: much of this collection is not for the sartorial minimalist. But if neon pink jeans and heavily studded leather jackets are your thing, then you may have found your new spring wardrobe. For the especially bold, there is a shorts-suit in a pixelated snakeskin design. Relatively more subtle is a navy suit with a psychadelic trim on the sleeves, pockets and lapels. That same design is repeated on a matching scarf and zip-front jacket. Williamson’s menswear collection is poised to be just as popular as his women’s line. Just don’t count on a shorter queue for this mid-May debut; a second shipment of his womenswear collection hits stores the same day.
