The team behind Rochambeau, Michael Venker, Joshua Cooper and Laurence Chandler, take their inspiration from disparate sources. The name of their label comes from the French term for the game Rock, Paper, Scissors, while the design for their Autumn/Winter 09 line was influenced by something most people do not look to beyond dinner: crustaceans. In developing their collection, the designers examined the idea of the exoskeleton found in lobsters and crabs as a way to study the relationship between defense and self, resulting in a collection rich with tough, protective layers. The line adds innovative shapes to familiar garments, like a hand-brushed flannel coat with an oversized hood and a wool jacket with an extended, asymmetrical collar. Ultimately, these idiosyncracies result in a sophisticated, urban collection that is both wearable and design-forward.
