The 3,000 square foot House at Rua Alabarda, located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was designed by architect Affonso Risi to accommodate multiple programmatic needs. The home’s owner approached Risi with a proposal that combined a three bedroom residence with a dedicated office and studio space. The property on which the home is situated slopes up from the street to meet the ground floor, which is limited to business use. Also located on this level are a carp pond and parking. A concrete staircase leads to living spaces above. Arranging the house in this manner allowed Risi to create designated “zones,” that prevent professional and personal spaces from overlapping. The upper level is a contemporary living space for the owner’s family and includes a garden and solarium. The home employs concrete as its primary material and pairs unfinished or white surfaces with bright red, yellow, and blue elements. Affonso Risi chose to combine living and work functions in a single structure as a pragmatic solution to crowded urban condtions and to reduce uneccessary travel time between home and work. His work can be viewed as a viable option for future metropolitan development.
