Photographing muscle cars flying through the air at top speeds sounds like a lot of fun. Through Matthew Porter, we get to relive our car enthusiastic childhood when we used to watch Dukes of Hazzards, while at the same time pretending our matchbox cars could actually fly. Porter’s very masculine photographic collection also consists of engines, cars burning out, and fort knox. His photographs can be seen at M+B. Matthew Porter’s (American, b. 1975) photographs capture a pause amidst clusters of absurd fantasy and muted desire. His spectacular shots of cars in mid-air on San Francisco streets, a dying nebula, and the Hindenburg making its way across the American West are mash-ups of reality and pure fiction. Their vibrant colors and seamless construction belie their fabricated nature, as they are moments of frozen time in a non-existent history. Manufacturing iconic images without factual account, Porter’s work is the stuff of legends. Matthew Porter graduated from Bard with a BFA and most recently graduated from Bard/ICP with an MFA in Photography.
