The New York Times Fashion & Style section gives a closer look into how most fashion labels are incorporating plaid into their collection. With plaid being a pretty tricky pattern to work with in any wardrobe, NY Times also tells us a few ways on how to do it right.
Though rules are not hard and fast, the tricks for mixing plaids are fairly obvious. You don’t want to mix plaids of the same size, colors or, for lack of a better word, loudness. Pants in a dark, muted plaid go well with a louder, brighter sport coat. A two-color small-check shirt looks smart with a multicolor oversize plaid scarf. And so on.
Plaid has had a long history of different associations – the outdoors, grunge and alternative, Scottish kilts, etc. This is an interesting article on how plaid has evolved into something more versatile in the world of fashion.
